For almost 10 years, I lived with the discomfort of having to accept what someone else said about me. He seemed to know me better than I had the ability to know myself.

Sure, it felt great on the rare occasion when he showered me with compliments about how amazing I was. But when he was battering me with snide criticism? Not so much.

I couldn’t help but feel icky every time he backed me into a corner and forced a new ugly “fact” about me down my throat. No matter how I tried, none of my arguments were strong enough to destroy his “evidence” or “logic.”

By the time that relationship chewed me up and spat me out, I had no clue who I was anymore. I needed to get to know myself all over again.

But how?

I could go the route the rest of the world usually recommends—psychology, self-help, and personality profiling books. I could even see a counselor or start exploring new hobbies to learn more about what I liked.

But as it turned out, my best option was my actual Maker. Because who could know me better than the One who made me?

And so I started a quest to answer the question, “What does God say about me?”

Genesis 1:27-30

I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. Psalm 139:14, 16

Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I have appointed you a prophet to the nations.

Jeremiah 1:5

How does God see me?

You’re an imperfect human, which means you fail sometimes. Maybe even epically.

The Father knows this about you and He loves you anyway.

Even if you figure out how to be a better woman, He won’t love you more. And even if you never change, He won’t love you less.

God loves you perfectly, just as you are, with no limits or conditions. He always has and He always will.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

John 3:16
  1. God loves me.
  2. I have eternal life because I believe in Jesus.

I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you.

Jeremiah 31:3b
  1. God loves me forever because His love never fails.
  2. God loves me faithfully.

Who does God say I am?

God created you, and every one of His creations is beautiful. Even after all you’ve done and all you’ve been through, God still thinks you’re beautiful.

As a confessed believer in Jesus, you’re a new creation who’s been made alive in Christ. Jesus’ blood has washed you clean and made you beautiful. Plus, you’re also the dwelling place for God’s promised Holy Spirit.

What does Jesus say about me?

God the Father says a lot about you. But so does Jesus the Son in the New Testament, through His life and teachings to His disciples.

So no answer to, “What does God say about me?” is complete without Jesus’ thoughts.

No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.

John 15:15
  1. I’m Jesus’ friend because He shares God’s word and thoughts with me.

But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

John 1:12-13
  1. I’m God’s daughter because I believe in and have received Jesus.
  2. I’m born again.

What does God think of me?

As a Christian woman, you have access to a spiritual blessing that’s only available to born-again believers.

Because of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross and your willingness to confess Him as your Savior, you have the blessing—the right—to be called God’s daughter and heir.

For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.

Galatians 3:26
  1. I’m God’s daughter because of my faith in Jesus.

So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.

Galatians 4:7

But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.

  2. I’m saved by Jesus Christ.

For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

What God Says about Me: Your Next Step

I lived with the ick of what my ex said about me for years. You see, I didn’t know I could fight his poison with God’s word of truth. So I let him spew his lies about who he thought I was all over me.

But you don’t have to let anyone else’s opinions tear you down. And you don’t have to keep missing signs God is speaking to you about who He says you are.

No matter what you’ve done, no one knows you better or loves you more than God.

“But, Kris,” I hear you wondering, “can I really trust what God says about me?”

Easy—yes. Because, unlike imperfect humans, God isn’t a liar.

God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?

Numbers 23:19
