Sociopath. Evil. Attention whore. Abnormal. Unable to love. Unforgiving. Disloyal.

The one who claimed to love me more than anyone else in the world called me all those names and more.

His unshakeable confidence in his opinions of me—and my shaky confidence in myself—had me convinced that he must know what he was talking about.

I must be all those terrible things, right? I must be the absolute worst and, without a doubt, not good enough for him.

As you can imagine, by the time the relationship chewed me up and spat me out, I felt lower than dirt and clueless about who I was.

No wonder the first thing God did when I let Him bust me out of there was to start schooling me on who I truly was.

Who I Am in Christ Affirmations from the Bible

Maybe you haven’t been called vile names like I was. I truly hope someone who’s supposed to love you hasn’t made it their personal mission in life to undermine your identity.

But maybe instead you’ve tied your identity to your accomplishments and position. “I’m a teacher/doctor/executive/university graduate/homeowner/owner of this amazing luxury vehicle.” Which means if you lose your job, social standing, or stuff, your sense of self goes out the window.

Or maybe just don’t feel comfortable in your own skin because you’ve gotten out of touch with yourself.

However it’s come to be, what do you do when you don’t know who you are anymore? How do you rediscover your true self?

Well, you can pay a bunch of money to someone who doesn’t know you. Then they’ll give you their professional analysis of your personality.

Or you can go straight to the source—to the One who made you and knows you better than you know yourself. He’s the One with the blueprint of exactly who He made you to be.

So who does the Bible say you are? Let’s look at some “I am” Bible declarations.

How to Learn Who I Am in Christ from Affirmations

But before we jump in, listen up! This advice I’m about to lay on you will help you get the most out of your who I am in Christ affirmations.

Here’s the thing. In my experience, affirmations don’t usually work. This is because you don’t actually believe them, no matter how often you repeat them. So you can recite these statements, trying to will yourself to believe them. Or…

You can work through these affirmations of who I am in Christ, intentionally thinking through each one and internalizing it.

To do this, as you read each identity in Christ affirmation, ask yourself if you fully believe it. Then:

  1. If you believe the affirmation, journal about the evidence of it in your life.
  2. If you don’t yet believe it, write a series of related factual statements that you can or already do believe.

Let’s take our first who I am in Christ affirmation as an example: I’m worth Jesus’ life. Therefore, I’m priceless and worthy. (Luke 12:6-7)

If you believe this affirmation, then journal about the specific evidence of it in your life. For example:

  • I remember one time when God showed me how much He values me. It was when…
  • Another time God showed me that I’m priceless was when He…

But if you don’t yet believe this affirmation, instead write a series of related statements you can or do believe. For example:

  • A thing is worth what someone is willing to pay for it.
  • Jesus was willing to pay for my freedom with His life.
  • I’m at least worth Jesus’ life because that’s what He paid for me.
  • My Lord Jesus Christ is the Son of God—Creator and Lord of the universe—so I’m pretty sure He’s worth a lot.
  • I’m worth a lot more than I think I am because Jesus paid a lot for me.

Do you see how this approach helps you to work through, internalize, and believe the truth of each statement?
