A few years ago, if you’d asked me who I was, my answer would have been immediate and sure.

First-class corporate executive and career woman. Committed, loving partner. Loyal, reliable friend. Devoted daughter.

They were the usual answers people expected to hear, the titles and roles to make them think the best of me.

As it turned out, the titles others assigned to me and the roles they expected me to play were a shaky foundation on which to build my identity. Because by the time it all came crashing down, I’d lost track of myself and had no idea who I was anymore.

I lost my job and could no longer claim to be a first-class corporate executive. My relationship broke up and I suddenly wasn’t a partner anymore. I took stock and realized most of my friends weren’t my real friends, so I had to let go of them too. And in the middle of it all, I felt betrayed because of observations people close to me only chose to share after it all fell apart.

You see, I’d spent my whole life becoming who everyone else said I should be. I let all the voices of the people who I wanted to love me influence who I became and drown out the only voice which truly mattered—God’s.

So when I was suddenly cast adrift in the middle of the storm of my life, I had to rebuild my whole identity. Thank God I started by asking the most important question…

God, Who Am I?

What about you? Do you identify yourself by the labels your society, family, and social circle have assigned to you? Have you been defining yourself based on who others think you should be?

What if you lost your job tomorrow? Or what if your man keeps hurting you emotionally and you decide to break up? What if you get tired of feeling like you’re not good enough and end up losing important relationships?

Who are you then? What shaky foundation have you built your identity on?

When my world came crashing down around me and flung me into an identity crisis, I was shocked, scared, and lost because I couldn’t answer the simple question, “Who am I?”

Here’s the thing though. When you change the question to “Who am I to God?” and seek Him for answers, you learn to respond with confidence because you’ve anchored your identity to the only reliable Rock.

So if you’ve also built your identity on an unstable, untrustworthy foundation, it’s time to tear it all down and rebuild. It’s time to find out who you are to God so your identity will be unshakeable through any storm.

So…Who Am I to God?

I don’t need to tell you who you are to God, not when He can do it better than I ever could. So let’s search the Scriptures for who God says you are to Him.

The 5 Bible verses we’ll explore are foundational for your identity. So here’s how to squeeze all the juice out of them:

  • Study them. Look up the words you don’t know and substitute synonyms into the verses so you understand them in ways you never did before.
  • Look them up in different Bible translations. This can help you pick up the nuances you may otherwise miss.
  • Rewrite each verse or passage in your own words. This helps you personalize it, so they don’t stay abstract concepts. Instead, you’ll process them as God’s perfect word to you.
  • Meditate on them and journal your thoughts about them.
  • Ask God for new and special revelations about who you are to Him based on each verse.
  • Turn each verse into a prayer back to God. What better way to honor Him than with His own words?
  • Make a Who Am I to God List in your journal from each verse. Then you’ll have easy access when you need it.

For each verse or passage below, I’ve given you a starter ‘Who Am I To God?’ list. You can copy it into your journal and add to it as God reveals more to you through each scripture.

My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.
