A Powerful Prayer for Feeling Lost + 3 Ways to Feel Found Again

Inside: Use this prayer for feeling lost when you don’t quite know what to say. Plus discover why you’re feeling lost so you know how to feel found again.

I stood statue-like at my office window, staring out seeing nothing.

Except for the occasional recrossing of my arms and flicker of my eyelids, I didn’t move an inch. But my mind was racing, looking for a solution to the problem that had been plaguing me for months.

My struggle was real, and I was beyond desperate for a way to stop feeling lost in my own life.

It had started small enough, with tiny bouts of dissatisfaction here and there. But by now it had ballooned into a live thing, pressing in on me more each day. Sucking up the air around me until I felt like I was suffocating. Only leaving me alone for a few precious moments of peace here and there. Dogging my every step so the only sanctuary left to me was sleep.

“Lord, I feel lost and I don’t know why,” I whispered to the view my eyes still didn’t see. It was the only prayer for feeling lost I had left in me. I’d run out of words and didn’t know what else to say.

And just like every other time I’d stood at this window whispering the same words, no solution came to me. So I turned away, plodded back to my desk, and got back to work.

But my heart kept whimpering, “Oh, God, I feel so lost.”

Why You Need a Prayer for Feeling Lost

It’s icky, isn’t it? When you feel lost in your life? Especially when you have a good life—some would even say a great one. Because then you also feel confused about why on Earth you’re feeling lost in your life.

If you’re like me, you went hard after what the world said would make you happy, and you got it all too. The right job, the house in a great neighborhood, cash in the bank, growing investments, and all the stuff you could ever want.

Plus the right relationship, the social circle overflowing with all the right people, and you in church every Sunday looking like you’re praising God for your amazing life.

And yet…

You find yourself drifting through your life, in a battle for your emotional and spiritual health. Looking for a prayer for feeling lost, even as you wage a war you’re not sure you’re winning.

On top of this, you know you should feel satisfied with the good life you have, which only makes you feel worse about yourself and your situation. Because now, you’re feeling lost, confused about why, and ungrateful for feeling it in the first place.

But hold up. Before you spiral anymore, take a deep breath, and let’s handle this problem one step at a time. Because the truth is, you need more than a prayer for feeling lost. You also need a solution.

First, let’s explore why the cry of your heart right now is, “Lord, I feel lost!” so you understand how you got here. This way, you’ll know the signs if you ever again find yourself feeling lost in your life.

Then, we’ll get into your prayer for feeling lost and the steps you need to take to feel found again.

But Here’s What’s Really Happening

You could probably come up with a long list of reasons why you’re thinking, “God, I feel lost!” on repeat. But if you follow each one back to its source, you’ll always end up at one of three root problems.

1. Lord, I feel lost because it all seems meaningless.

Sure, your life looks successful. But under the surface, you’re bored out of your mind. Your motivation is at an all-time low and you’re passionate about exactly nothing.

Every weekday looks pretty much like the one before it: you get up, go to work, plod through your joyless workday, and make it to 5 o’clock. Then you try to make the evening hours last forever as you push back all thoughts of tomorrow being a soul-sucking replica of today.

Your weekends are a hairsbreadth better, only because they give you a 2-day pass from your weekday jail. Still, each one rolls around with a disturbing sameness. Heck, even your vacations feel stale. And why wouldn’t they? You keep going to the same places.

No wonder you need a prayer for feeling lost! Your whole life feels like Groundhog Day.

And I don’t blame you. Living a cookie-cutter life—one you can’t distinguish from anyone else’s around you, one where you don’t feel special or like you’re making a real difference—is bound to make you feel this way.

2. God, I feel lost because I went off your path.

This might be the biggest reason why you’re struggling right now. More often than not, when you’re feeling lost in your life it’s because you’re not living the life God intended for you.

You see, my darling, God’s always had a plan for your life. And because you’re His daughter, your heart knows it.

For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

Ephesians 2:10 (NLT)

The problem is, God’s plan for your life often doesn’t look like what the world says your plan should be. Plus, His plan is usually uncomfortable and always requires you to renew your mind and transform yourself. This all means the people whose approval and respect you want may sneer at, ridicule, look down on, or dismiss you. And you need to be OK with that.

So because the discomfort of walking the path God’s laid out for you kinda sucks, you choose to keep feeling lost in your happy-looking life.

In all of this, it’s easy to forget one simple thing.

And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.

Romans 8:28 (NLT)

As His daughter, your heart knows the joy waiting for you when you’re walking in God’s plan, no matter how uncomfortable the journey. And it won’t give you peace until you get on board with it.

3. Lord, I feel lost and I shouldn’t!

The thing is, any way you look at it, your life is overflowing with blessings. And because of this, you tell yourself you shouldn’t be feeling lost, which only leaves you feeling ungrateful and even more lost.

You’re should-ing all over yourself and making your problem worse.

If you’re like me, you’ve probably tried talking about this feeling with someone else, someone you hoped would listen with a sympathetic ear and maybe even help you solve the problem. Except, all they did was scoff and dismiss your feelings.

They left you feeling self-indulgent, even more ungrateful, and slightly stupid for all the angst you’re putting yourself through because you’re unhappy in your first-world life.

In the end, their unhelpful, dismissive advice was to suck it up and stop complaining. And go volunteer—that’ll make you feel better.

Or maybe scoff and dismiss you. Maybe instead they sent you off to do some pampering and self-care so you’d feel better, or to read a self-development book so you’d do better.

Even worse, as you sit atop this heaving pile of emotions, everyone else around you looks like they’re loving their lives. As far as you can see, they don’t need a prayer for feeling lost, which only makes you feel worse about yourself and your situation.

So now you’re feeling lost, ungrateful, unheard, and alone.

What Came before This Prayer for When You Feel Lost

Of course, as a woman who works for what she wants, looking for a prayer for feeling lost isn’t the first thing you’ve tried.

The truth is, you haven’t taken this thing lying down at all. You’ve tried all the things the gurus suggest: yoga to find inner peace, self-help books to fix yourself, volunteering to remind yourself of why you should be content with what you have, and affirmations to convince yourself nothing is wrong with your life. And this is just the tip of the iceberg!

But not one single thing has worked for more than a hot minute. And do you know why? It’s because none of them addresses the real reasons why you’re feeling lost in the first place.

You’re using these things to treat your symptoms instead of dealing with the root cause. All these Band-Aids will do is make you feel better in the moment but they won’t make you stop feeling lost in the long run.

So how about this? Let’s stop trying these guaranteed-to-fail tactics. Instead, let’s take a different approach to deal with your underlying problem so you can solve it for real this time.

A Prayer for Feeling Lost

Before we jump into a 3-step plan for how to feel found again, let’s do some pre-work. We want to start this journey on the right foot, so let’s pray.

Lord, I feel lost in my life and guilty for feeling this way! I mean, my needs are more than met, yet here I am—dissatisfied and discontented in my good-looking life.

First, thank You for showing me I don’t need to compare myself to others. Not those who are happy in similar lives, or those who want to live the life I have. All I need to focus on is whether or not I’m walking out Your plan for me.

Thank You for also showing me this truth: I won’t stop feeling lost until I get with Your program.

I know walking the path You’ve laid out for me won’t always be easy or feel good. But You promise me a fruitful life as long as I stay planted in Your word. So I’ll root myself and my life in You.

I submit myself to You, Lord, as I dive into this plan to stop feeling lost in my life. I’m done with the plan the world has laid out for me. Instead, I abandon myself and my life to You.

Please, walk and speak with me as I go through this process, Lord. You promise to answer if I faithfully seek You. So answer now, while I get quiet and listen for Your voice. In Jesus’ precious name. Amen.

Now you’re ready to dive into 3 steps to will help you stop feeling lost and start feeling found again.

Lord, I Feel Lost: A Plan to Feel Found Again

Don’t worry, this isn’t a huge new assignment to add overwhelm on top of your burden of feeling lost.

This plan has 3 simple but powerful steps to help you stop feeling lost in your life. These steps will help you find your way back to joy and fulfillment, but only if you do them.

1. After your prayer for feeling lost, take stock.

Once you’ve said this prayer when you feel lost and asked for God’s guidance as you walk through this simple plan, it’s time to get to work.

You can’t bridge a gap until you acknowledge the gap’s existence and understand how wide it is. In this case, a gap exists between the life you’re living and the life you deeply—maybe even secretly—desire.

So the first thing you need to do is to go through each major area of your life and detail the truth of it now versus the dream of how you want your life to be.

Here are some areas you can consider:

  • Work
  • Love life
  • Lifestyle
  • Money
  • Relationship with God
  • Physical health
  • Emotional health

Now, if you’ve been going hard after the world’s plan for happiness, you may not have a clear vision anymore for how you’d rather live your life. This takes you to the next step in your plan to stop feeling lost in your life.

2. Pray about feeling lost then ask for revelation.

Most likely, at some earlier point in your life, you had precious dreams about how your life story would go. Even if you didn’t know all the details, you had a pretty good idea.

If you remember those dreams, go to town putting flesh on their bones now. Let your imagination soar as you write them out in as much detail as you can.

But if you’ve lost your handle on the dreams God gave you way back when, you may not have a clue about what you’d rather your life look like now.

If this is the case, it’s time to hit your knees and ask God to bring those dreams back to your remembrance or reveal new dreams to you. Say a prayer for God’s guidance as you seek a brand new vision for your life.

The answers may not hit you like lightning from the sky but if you ask, open yourself to receive, and don’t judge any kernel that comes to mind, you’ll find your answer.

3. Beyond saying a prayer for feeling lost, do what God says.

Steps 1 and 2—being honest with yourself by admitting you want something different and resurrecting lost dreams—aren’t easy. But they aren’t super hard either.

Step 3 though…well, it’s a different story. You see, you need courage for it because you’ll probably have to go against what the world’s been telling you to do. When it’s your first time doing this, you’ll feel so scared, you may want to quit.

But courage means you feel the fear and still take action in the direction of your dreams.

So go ahead and resurrect those dreams—or birth some new ones—and see how they stack up against your current life. Then get with God and decide on the single next best step you need to take to get on the path to living your dreams.

Put Your Prayer for Feeling Lost into Action

Looking back now, it feels like I spent years staring out my office window, my mouth mute while my heart cried out, “Lord, I feel lost and I don’t like it. Fix it, please. Fix me!”

My old prayer for feeling lost assumed I didn’t have the power to make new decisions or take my life in a whole new direction. It assumed I had to stick with the old decisions that had landed me in the pickle of feeling lost in my life. It assumed something was wrong with me.

But this wasn’t true. Something was wrong with the life I was living and with how I was praying about feeling lost. But not a thing was wrong with me.

Nothing is wrong with you either. You need a prayer for feeling lost simply because you’ve gotten stuck in a rut of your own making, living a life you never truly wanted and telling yourself you shouldn’t feel this way. All while missing the joy you know you could have if you pursued God’s plan for you instead.
