If you’re like me, uncertainty isn’t your favorite. On a good day, it feels scratchy and ill-fitting, like a cheap suit on sensitive skin. On a bad day, it’s like sandpaper dragging across a tender wound.

Either way, it never feels good.

Usually, when you’re tangled up in uncertainty, your life feels out of control, like someone else is pulling all the strings. You feel unsure about what to do now and afraid of what’s coming at you next.

In times of uncertainty, the way ahead is foggy and you can’t see the path under your feet. Which is unnerving because one wrong move in any direction could mean you plummet to disaster.

Yes, uncertainty is uncomfortable, confusing, and often downright scary. But as a child of God, you have the cure.

It’s praying for faith and learning to trust God through it.

How to Say Prayers for Faith and Trust in God

Trusting God is easy when you know exactly what to expect. When your plans are unfolding as they should, and when your life is comfortable and feels safe.

But real faith shows up when you start trusting God through uncertainty. When you’re wondering where He is, why He seems silent, and how on earth you’ll make it through another day.

A big part of successfully navigating times of uncertainty and doubt—of shoring up your faith as you go through—is prayer.

But how do you pray when you’re drowning in fear? What do you do when you’re at the end of your rope? And where do you turn when you don’t know how to pray for faith and trust in God anymore?

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.

5 Prayer Points on Trusting God

David wrote Psalm 31, probably when he was running from crazed, murderous King Saul.

Fugitive life—talk about uncertainty!

But although David was stressed way out, He knew trusting God for guidance and deliverance was his best option.

So let’s take away 5 critical prayer points from David’s Psalm 31 prayer of trust in God.

1. Tell God about your pain.

If you’ve read any of David’s Psalms, you know he wasn’t shy about sharing everything with God. Whether he felt sorrow, anger, or joy, David told God about it.

It’s not surprising, then, that he did the same in this psalm. In the middle of his uncertain situation, David shared his raw, not-so-pretty feelings with God.

Have mercy on me, Lord, for I am in distress. Tears blur my eyes. My body and soul are withering away. I am dying from grief; my years are shortened by sadness. Sin has drained my strength; I am wasting away from within.

Psalm 31:9-10 (NLT)

2. Ask God for what you need.

David also wasn’t shy about telling God what he wanted to happen—even as he prayed for faith and trust in God through his uncertain situation.

Time and again in this psalm, David directly asked God for what he wanted.

O Lord, I have come to you for protection; don’t let me be disgraced. Save me, for you do what is right. Turn your ear to listen to me; rescue me quickly. Be my rock of protection, a fortress where I will be safe…Pull me from the trap my enemies set for me, for I find protection in you alone…Let your favor shine on your servant. In your unfailing love, rescue me.

Psalm 31:1-2, 4, 16 (NLT)

Even as you ask God for what you need, hold loosely to your request. A quick rescue may not be in God’s plan, or He may show up to rescue you in unexpected ways.

3. Remember who God is to you.

Often in times of doubt and uncertainty, you may be tempted to treat God like your personal genie. You expect him to magic up a rescue with the snap of His fingers, just because you asked.

But not David.

He remembered exactly who God is and put Him in His rightful place.

You are my rock and my fortress. For the honor of your name, lead me out of this danger.

Psalm 31:3 (NLT)

When you ask God for what you need as the storm rages around you, do like David and lean into Him as your safe place. Then put the glory of your rescue on Him.

4. Declare your trust in God.

David made a clear statement of faith and trust in God.

But I am trusting you, O Lord, saying, “You are my God!” My future is in your hands.

Psalm 31:14-15a (NLT)

You can practically see David handing over the reins of control—not only for his current situation but also for his whole life—to God.

This is exactly how you learn to trust God: you decide to trust Him, then you faithfully submit yourself to Him no matter what’s happening around you.

5. Praise God for His faithful love.

David shared his fear and pain over his situation with God, and he asked God for what he wanted.

But in the middle of it all, he also praised God for what he knew He would do.

I will be glad and rejoice in your unfailing love, for you have seen my troubles, and you care about the anguish of my soul…Praise the Lord, for he has shown me the wonders of his unfailing love. He kept me safe when my city was under attack.

Psalm 31:7, 12 (NLT)

Remember, prayer isn’t about listing your demands to God and begging Him to make all your wishes come true.

Prayer is two-way communication between you and the Creator of the entire universe…and beyond! How awesome is that?

Plus, praise has a way of uplifting your soul. So as you say your prayer for trusting God, remember to praise Him for who He is and what He’s already done.

3 Inspiring Prayers For Faith And Trust In God

You now have 5 simple guidelines from Psalm 31 for your prayer for faith and trust in God:

  1. Tell God about your pain—for you, not for Him, since He already knows more about what’s in your heart than you do.
  2. Ask God for what you need—and hold loosely to your expectations for how and when He’ll rescue you.
  3. Remember who God is to you—not a genie granting your wishes, but a fortress sheltering you from the storm.
  4. Declare your trust in God—make an intentional, faith-based decision.
  5. Praise God for His faithful love—do it to remind yourself of God’s character, and to uplift your soul.

Now it’s time to say your own powerful prayer to trust God and have faith in Him.

A Prayer to Trust God

“What do you mean, ‘If I can’?” Jesus asked. “Anything is possible if a person believes.” The father instantly cried out, “I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief!”

Mark 9:23-24 (NLT)

Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

John 20:29 (ESV)

Father God, my soul is wrecked right now. A little while ago, all was right with my world. Then suddenly, with one blow, I’m mired in uncertainty and reeling towards fear and panic.

But, I remember who I serve: God, who hasn’t given me a spirit of fear but of power, love, and a sound mind. God, who knows the end from the beginning, for whom none of this is a surprise. God, whose plans are for my hopeful future, and not for evil.

So now, in the middle of my uncertain circumstance, Lord—in the middle of my pain—I pray for Your strengthening love to help my unbelief. Help me be my own witness, Jesus, as I recall past times when You rescued me. When you protected and set me on the path to victory.

I believe in You, Lord, and refuse to let my heart be troubled or afraid. I offer you my mustard seed faith as I trust You to move this mountain from before me. Or move me around or over it.

The how of my victory is Your business, Lord. My business is to do what You tell me.

So I wait for You, Holy Spirit. Whisper what you want me to do in my ear, as I build my trust on the foundation of Your love.

I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

A Prayer for Trusting God’s Plan

Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.

Proverbs 3:5-6 (NLT)

Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust him, and he will help you.

Psalm 37:5 (NLT)

Oh God, I’m scared out of my wits. I’ve been sideswiped by these changes in my life and the uncertainty is wrecking me. Which way do turn, Lord? What do I do? I feel lost, confused, and adrift.

But You know what, Lord? I don’t have to worry about not having a plan. Because You have one; You’ve told me so. It’s not an emergency backup plan, either. It’s Your plan from before I was born.

I know You’ll use this obstacle as a part of Your plan. And You’ll bring about my good and Your glory as a result.

Wrap me in your empowering love, Lord, as I boldly face this uncertainty with faith and trust in You. How can I be anything but bold with Your mighty, warring angels at my back?

And even though I don’t yet know where this will end, I trust You. Because You delight in giving Your children good gifts when they ask.

I submit my faith to You, God. And I wait in silence and trust for Your word on my next best step, as I do my part to stay in sync with Your good plan.

I pray in Jesus’ saving name. Amen.

A Prayer of Faith and Trust in God

Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.

Isaiah 41:10 (NLT)

I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Romans 15:13 (NLT)

Lord, I won’t pretend I like anything about this situation. It feels icky, scary, and super uncomfortable. And honestly, I wouldn’t have chosen it.

But I’m here now. And I may not know what’s to come or be clear yet on what to do next. But I’m confident that I’m not alone. I know You’re here with me and all around me, Holy Spirit. And I know You’ve got this all under control, Father God.

So it doesn’t matter what my icky, fickle feelings say, or what lies the enemy whispers in my ear. I’ll keep my eyes confidently focused on You, Jesus. Because You’ve already made me more than a conqueror.

My heart’s deepest desire, especially now, is to stay in Your will. So show me what to do, Lord, and I’ll do it with complete faith and trust that You’re working it all out for Your glory.

When I come through this refining fire, Lord, I’ll reek of Holy Ghost smoke. So infuse me with courage and confidence now as I take my next step of faith.

In Jesus’ mighty name I pray. Amen.

Bonus Tips and Short Prayers about Trust in God

You’re now equipped with the tools you need to pray for faith and trust in God. And you have a starter kit of written prayers to get you going.

But you may have more questions about trusting God burning in your brain. So let’s answer them so you can reinforce your faith and become a pro at trusting God.

How do I put faith and trust in God?

You yearn to trust God but you don’t know where to start. Use these simple tips to start putting your faith and trust in God.

  1. Dig into God’s word and learn about Him for yourself. Then you’ll start understanding His nature and why He’s worth trusting.
  2. Compare God’s word to what the world and your fickle feelings say. You’ll see that God is the only totally trustworthy presence in your life. Because the world is notoriously bad at giving godly advice, and your feelings often change on a dime.
  3. Start looking for reasons to trust God. Confirmation bias is real—your brain is always seeking evidence to prove what it believes to be true. So put it to work finding proof for what you want to believe.

Now, I could give you a million more tips on how to put your faith and trust in God. But in the end, it comes down to one thing. You decide to trust Him.

What does trusting in the Lord look like?

The Bible is riddled with ordinary people who trusted in the Lord. So if you want to know what putting your faith and trust in Him looks like, a great place to start is by studying one of their stories.

Take Queen Esther, for example. She had the awesome responsibility of saving her people from genocide. This was a classic situation of needing to put faith and trust in God.

Let’s see what trusting in the Lord looked like when Esther did it.

Then Esther told them to reply to Mordecai, “Go, gather all the Jews to be found in Susa, and hold a fast on my behalf, and do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my young women will also fast as you do. Then I will go to the king, though it is against the law, and if I perish, I perish.”

Esther 4:15-16 (ESV)

Esther asked for prayer and said her own prayers. But then she did the one thing most people skip.

She acted, even though she knew she may suffer—or even die—as a consequence.

From this, you learn that trusting in the Lord and putting your faith in Him means you do what He tells you. Even when it’s hard and goes against what the world says.

How do you pray for strong faith?

What if you trust God to some degree but you want to strengthen your faith? How do you say a prayer to increase your faith and trust in God?

I’ve found that when you pray for God to help you trust Him more, He’ll give you situations to make you practice putting your faith and trust in Him.

This means you shouldn’t expect God to miraculously zap you with Hall of Faith level trust in Him. Instead, expect God to send you to the faith gym so you can bulk up until you have faith muscles of steel. After all, you put more value on what you pay for than what you get for free.

If you’re serious about praying to increase your faith and trust in God, use this Bible verse and simple prayer to start.

The Sovereign Lord is my strength! He makes me as surefooted as a deer, able to tread upon the heights.

Habakkuk 3:19 (NLT)

I trust You, Lord. but I want to turn my mustard seed faith into a mighty oak of trust and faith in You. I can’t rely on my own willpower or strength to take me to the next level, because they fail me…all the time! So I seek Your face and your might as I pray for steel-like faith in You.

How do you pray when your faith is weak?

On the flip side of our last question is the situation where you don’t have much—or any—faith in God.

I usually find that in these situations, what you’re really looking for and what you really need is divine comfort.

In the middle of your mess, you want to know God’s got you. You want to know you’ll make it to the other side, especially when you feel like you’re going under.

The first thing to do is use the 5 simple tweaks in Your Faith & Trust Reboot.

Then you can start your prayer for faith like this.

He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless.

Isaiah 40:29 (NLT)

Oh God, I feel tired and defeated, and my faith is hanging by a thread. But you promise to give me new strength if I trust in You. I do, Lord; I trust you! Please strengthen my faith now, so I can soar high like an eagle, run without growing weary, and walk without fainting.

How do you pray for strength in difficult times?

I’m a big fan of the Bible story about the woman with the issue of blood. You can read about her in Matthew 9, Mark 5, or Luke 8.

What a testimony of strength in difficult times! This woman had bled nonstop for 12 years. Yet she gathered the strength to position herself for healing.

When you need strength in the middle of your struggle, you can say a prayer for faith and trust in God like this.

So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the Lord your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you.

Deuteronomy 31:6 (NLT)

Father God, you’re my refuge and strength, my very present help in this time of overwhelming trouble. Your Holy Spirit, who lives in me, strengthens me! So why should I falter or fear? Even though my world feels like it’s crumbling around me, I won’t be afraid. Instead, I put my faith and trust in You.
