Oily and insidious, it seeps into your life like a noxious gas. Sure, it doesn’t kill you. But it leaves you feeling nauseous and sick.

Regret creeps up on you like a ninja. You don’t feel its threat until you’re choking on memories. Missed opportunities, unchased dreams, unrealized potential. And the worst—lost time.

Before Your Prayers for Fear

I learned from example the example of my elders to make choices based on fear. And I mean any fear.

We’re talking about fear of:

  • Change
  • Failure
  • Others’ judgment
  • Looking like an idiot
  • Wasting time
  • People not liking you
  • Carving your own path
  • Making the wrong decision

And just about any other fear you can think of.

As long as it involved leaving the safety of the familiar and venturing into the unknown, I was taught to fear and avoid it.

But let me tell you. The bitterest regret you can feel in your life comes when you look back at what could have been if only you hadn’t made choices driven by fear.

Believe me, you don’t want regret to be your bestie. But be warned—if you keep making fear-based decisions, it will.

Here’s the good news: You can get as close as is humanly possible to never regretting a day in your life. All you have to do is stop choosing fear.

You can fight fear and sidestep regret by choosing courage instead.

Still, when you’re in the habit of choosing fear, it’s hard to start choosing courage at the snap of your fingers. In fact, this rarely happens without some kind of major, semi-traumatic life change or epiphany.

The gurus may tell you, “Just do it! Just jump in and do it!”

But how? Especially when your fear habit is always lurking in the background, waiting to inject you with a fresh dose of its poison.

Well, here’s the best news: You have a powerful weapon in your arsenal.

It’s prayer.

A Prayer for Fear and Protection

Fear uses your memories of failure and discomfort to try and kill your future. Heck, sometimes it even creates possible future memories to keep you stuck and trapped where you are.

Instead of letting fear rule your memories, use your memories of Who you serve to claim your bright future.

Heavenly Father, I lift my eyes, my heart, and my arms to you in praise. Who is there like You? You made heaven, Earth, and everything in them!

You command the morning, knit together every living thing, and position every star and constellation in the sky. Plus, You appoint a time for everything. Lord, You’re timeless and constant, never changing. You exist before, through, and above all things.

I praise You, my God, for Your might and for Your wonderful works. My Lord God almighty, I stand in awe that You, who created everything, have given Your word to be my light and my defense. And I know You will because Your word is eternal and Your promises are sure. Not one word You speak ever fails.

Forget about earthly armies—You’re God of the armies of heaven! Who can triumph over You, Lord? And why should I be afraid? No one and nothing can stand against You, and my soul knows it very well.

I bow before You in awe, Lord. I know You go ahead of me and send Your angels to stand guard over me. So I bow before You now and surrender my fear to You.

Receive my praise and gratitude, Lord, as I receive Your grace and encouragement. Amen.

A Short Prayer to Overcome Fear

Fear of discomfort will pin you down and keep you stuck. It will make you feel unworthy, not good enough, and like an imposter.

Instead of letting fear tell you who you are, call on your knowledge of who you are in Christ.

Don’t let fear grip your heart and mind, lie to you, and make you believe you don’t even know who you are. Use this prayer for fear to activate your memories of who you are to God.

Lord Jesus, I come to You on my knees in surrender. I’m scared out of my mind of this thing I’m facing. I feel frozen by fear and overcome with anxiety.

But even as I’m tempted to cower, I remember what You say—You haven’t given me a spirit of fear. Therefore, this feeling is not from You and it doesn’t honor you. This is me surrendering territory to the enemy of my soul. So here’s what I know.

I know You stand for me, Lord. Your word says You care for me and work out everything for my good and Your glory because I love you.

I know I’m Your child because I’ve believed in and confessed Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection. Now, I’m family to You and You care for me through every circumstance in my life.

I also know You’ve promised to guide and comfort me, even as I walk through the darkest valley.

Knowing all this, I have to ask: What circumstance could ever be bigger than You? There’s nothing and no one I can’t overcome with and through Your Holy Spirit.

Thank You, God, for reminding me of why I have no reason to fear what I’m facing. You’re my unfailing God who’s given me a spirit of power, love, and sound judgment. Amen!

A Powerful Prayer for Fear

Fear will stop you in your tracks with what-ifs. Like, what if you don’t get what you want, no matter how hard you try or how fervent your prayers are?

Instead of letting fear stop you with what-ifs, stand on God’s promises, firm in your faith.

Don’t let fear get away with making you doubt what God has in store for you. Return to His promises with this prayer for fear.

I turn to You now, oh God, in thanksgiving for every promise You’ve made to me. You promise:

    • To deliver me from all of my fears when I seek You.
    • That I don’t need to be afraid when I put my trust in You.
    • To never leave me nor forsake me, and to come to my rescue.
    • You’ll be with me, to help me, and to hold me up.
    • To sustain me and never let me fall because You’re my Rock, my Fortress, and my Deliverer.
    • To work all of this together for my good because I’ve been called according to Your purpose.
    • You’re my ever-present help.
    • You’ll deliver me from all my fears if I pray.

With Your faithfulness as my strength and my shield, I stand now on every promise You’ve made to me, Lord. I know one thing: No matter what my natural eyes see and what my earth-bound heart wants, You’re always at work in unseen ways.

On top of all this, Your mercy and compassion toward me never fail. They’re new every morning.

I know You are not a man so You do not lie, and You never speak empty words. So saturate me with the courage I need to face my circumstances.

With Your promises hidden in my heart, I receive Your peace that passes all understanding. Amen.

After Your Prayers for Fear: Your Courage and Confidence

The only regrets I have in my life are the times when I let fear steal God’s promises and opportunities from me.

Those are the times when I went with the crowd and cared more about what they thought than about who God made me to be.

I don’t make fear-based decisions anymore. In fact, these days when I feel fear, I know it’s an area into which I need to step boldly with faith. And I’ve been victorious every single time.

As for you, these prayers for fear can help you avoid the regret of more missed opportunities, unchased dreams, unrealized potential, and lost time. These prayers for fear can help you walk in victory.

Real talk, though. By the world’s standards, victory can sometimes look like failure. But victory by God’s standards means seizing courage and standing in faith against your fear.

This may look like saying goodbye to the well–paying job you hate, walking away from the toxic relationship, or chasing your non-traditional God-given dreams.

Victory is kicking fear in the teeth and leaving no room for regret to poison your life.

So say these prayers for fear. Then rise up in courage and confidence, and claim your victory!

For he himself has said, I will never leave you or abandon you.  Therefore, we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.  What can man do to me?
